Movember 2011

Remembrance Day 2011

Movember 2011

It’s that time of year again, when the fellows get a bit bristly for a good cause. The 100 Mile Fire-Rescue team are growing out their whiskers to support Movember, which raises awareness for men’s health issues like prostate cancer.

Thanks for your support!

Firefighter Joe Guerreiro has been with the 100 Mile House hall for over 35 years – keep it up, Joe!

Rainbows & Rescue

When the pagers go off, hall members have to dress quick and be ready for the truck in under two minutes- it helps when their gear is neatly put away, with all necessary equipment easily accessible.

The Emergency Services Training Centre serves many functions for the 100 Mile House fire department and surrounding halls. Not only do local volunteer halls use the site but it also hosts training and educational events for out-of-area emergency service workers. See the 100 Mile Fire-Rescue website for more details.

Rehab

Firefighting is a tough job – but someone’s gotta do it, right? To ensure hall members are well enough to perform such heavy duties, they must go through “rehab” where their blood pressure, pulse and oxygen are checked before and during fire scenarios. At fire scenes, BC Ambulance paramedics take part in assessing the firefighters.

The local athletes and volunteers involved with the Special Olympics hosted a Bowl-a-rama today. Members of 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue along with 108 Ranch Fire Chief Marcel Reid took part in good food and good games.

The first Wednesday practice of the month means one of the platoons is serving the other dinner (and, once in a blue moon, the officers pitch in, too) before the members delve into various meetings led by Chief Darrell Blades (includes operations; health and safety; and association). Platoon A (well, mostly Firefighter Crystal) finally stepped it up a notch with an extravagant turkey dinner, complete with all the fixin’s. It was a welcome change from the usual frozen fare from the A Team, (obviously, I’m a bit biased as I’m on Platoon B).

Crystal’s apple crumble with vanilla ice cream was an excellent addition to the meal and got the association meeting off to a good start. Upcoming events were discussed, including participation in the Special Olympics Bowl-a-rama and a bed race in Clinton.

Then, down to business!

Fire Chief Darrell Blades presented the 2010 annual report to 100 Mile House Council March 8. Topics covered included enrolment statistics, rescue boundaries and new stricter guidelines for volunteer firefighters. Mayor Mitch Campsall thanked Darrell and all hall members for their continuing services to the community.

This week marks the departure of Deputy Chief Rick Lewington, as he left the Cariboo for an exciting new job in Langley. Rick’s been with the hall for almost 25 years! The crew is definitely bummed about Rick moving on; however, the hall does smell noticebly better.

Best of luck to Rick and his family!! Thank you for your years of dedication.

Cariboo Marathon 2011

On Feb. 12, 2011, members volunteered as parking attendants for the Cariboo Marathon, held annually  by the Cariboo Nordics. We gathered at the hall for 7:30 a.m. and drove Rescue 11 to the ski hill. But before all boots had hit the snow at the skier’s starting point, the pagers sounded and the team of six split into two; three responded to the call in Rescue 11 and three stayed to guide vehicles into their spots. http://100milenordics.com/2010/11/cariboo-marathon-gold-rush/
